Sony SRS XB 31 is another model from the most popular Extra Bass series. XB 31 is proudly made for the party. The speaker comes with a lot of features that you can’t resist buying.

Inside The Box

When you unbox the speaker, you will get a speaker, USB Cable, operating instruction, instruction Manual, and warranty card. All stuff placed very neatly.

Build Quality

Talking about its build quality, it’s exceptionally durable. The size of the speaker is ideal, not bigger or smaller, just perfect. Rated with IP67, the speaker is waterproof, dustproof, rustproof, which is something cool.

Speaker has some weight as it weighs 898 grams. XB 31 has a flashing strobe that adds more attraction. Sony has three kinds of sound profiles, i.e., extra bass, standard, and live sound.

Unfortunately, there are no dedicated buttons to activate these audio profiles. The buttons are present at the top of the speaker. These buttons are of power on/off, volume up, volume down, pairing, play/pause. All buttons are tactile and clicky. A USB, mini USB, and audio jack are covered under a rubber flap.

The speaker has a small rubber fits on which the speaker rests. But I think these feet are so little that they are not capable of handling the weight of the speaker. When the speaker gets loud, it starts to roll out, especially in extra bass mode.

Sound Quality

Sony SRS Xb 31 has massive bass, and you can twitch the equalizer for a well-balanced sound.

Sony has a particular app to control the sound of the speaker with several customization options. For the excellent bass, you can set it on Extra Bass mode.

Extra bass mode fills your room with those high notes, and you are not able to listen to the lyrics properly. If you want a balanced sound with decent bass, turn the extra bass mode off and switch to standard mode. Again it’s up to you. If the beat matters for you rather than notes, go with extra bass mode.

The speaker has a unique feature. You can make different sounds like a kick drum, scratch, snare, and cowbell by merely tapping your speaker in different places. Control the volume with force, give it a good hit for a loud output or tap gently for a soft sound.

Battery Performance

Sony has claimed the battery back up of 24 hours, but in actual usage, there are a lot of restrictions to get that much backup. When you put the volume at 60%, you can get up to 16 hours of battery backup. Also, the speaker comes with a USB port that can be used for charging the smartphone.

If you waste your speaker’s battery to charge your smartphone, then probably you will not get sufficient backup. The speaker takes up to 4 hours to get fully charged. If you turn off the speaker during charging, it takes even less than 4 hours.

Others

Party chain features let you connect up to 100 speakers so that you can make a party chain to create the party atmosphere. NFC is also working fine.

Call quality of speaker excellent. The person from both ends can clearly hear each other. The noise cancellation is also up to mark.

Conclusion

In my opinion, the XB 31 is a perfect Bluetooth speaker with almost all essential features. The speaker is also small as compared to all the remaining speakers from this series. If you need a portable speaker to fill the mid size room with great bass, then go for it.

  • 1 Waranty Card

Inside of the box, you get the speaker a Quick Start Guide, reference guide, warranty information, and some info on the mobile app, which gives you control of some of the settings. You also get a charger and unlike most Bluetooth speakers that charge with the USB cable. An AC adapter that you plug into the wall.

Build Quality

Sony SRS XB 30 is quite a bit larger than Sony SRS XB 20 measuring nine inches wide, three and a quarter inches tall and three and a half inches deep. It also has some heft as well, weighing almost double at just over two pounds.

The speaker is made of a mix of textured and smoother plastic, which has a nice feel to it. There are two front-facing drivers with a passive radiator on the front and another on the rear. The front of the speaker is covered in a metal grille. It includes a colored ring that lights up and pulses to your music.

There are two strobing white LEDs flash to the beat. The light ring will cycle through a few different colors, and using the app; you can choose between a few different presets or choose a solid color.

The lights do drain more of the battery, so if you want to conserve battery life or find them distracting, you can quickly turn them off by holding the extra-base button down. The lights get pretty bright, and they look good even in a wallet room. All the controls are on the top.

From the left, there’s the extra-base button that you can hold down to toggle the lights on or off. Next to that is the call button, which will answer, and a call a single press will bring up Google Now or Siri, and if you hold it down, there are voice prompts to tell you the battery level.

Battery Performance

Battery life is rated at up to 24 hours, but Sony says that’s what the lights off. I was able to get over 20 hours of playback at 75% volume with the lights on. Another thing to point out is, once the battery gets to about 20%, then the maximum volume is reduced, so the last few hours before the battery is going to die, it’s capped at less than 50% volume.

Others

There’s a built-in mic for voice calls too, and call quality sounded great. It’s loud and clear on both ends.

Sound Quality

Now when it comes to the sound quality, the Sony SRS XB 30 sounds great with plenty of low ends. You can toggle the extra bass on and off, but I think it sounds better on all the time. It’s not going to give you a crazy amount of bass, but it fills out the low end and makes the speaker sound larger.

The kick drums hit nice and hard with more low-end presence than JBL charge three. there’s a big difference in the amount of bass here compared to the smaller Sony SRS XB 20

Final Word

The Sony SRS XB 30 is also water-resistant, but it’s not entirely watertight. So it’s okay if it’s just going to get splashed, but it’s not meant to be fully submerged in water.

So the Sony SRS XB 30 is a great speaker overall. The lights are cool with the option to customize them or disable them altogether. The ability to charge another device is excellent. Battery life is fantastic. I like the NFC for quick pairing, and EQ is an impressive feature. It’s not my favorite overall. If you don’t need a fully waterproof speaker, this is the one to get.

Bluetooth speakers are fantastic to think this small device outputs clear, loud sound with bass wirelessly connected to your phone and has a rechargeable battery making it portable is just incredible. JBL Charge 3 fulfils exactly these basic needs with its outstanding performance.

Physical Appearance

The first thing that I love about the speaker is its unique shape which adds some attraction.

There are two regular drivers placed on the front side.

On the sides, there are two passive radiators. The passive radiators are significant as compared to other speakers in the same class. At the bottom, there is a flat foot that allows the speaker to stay in an upward direction lying horizontally.

When you turn around the speaker to the back, there is a rubber flap under which three ports are present. An audio jack, a mini USB port for charging, and the last one is a USB port.

When you put the speaker on feet, you will notice a few buttons to control the speaker that is present on top. The buttons are clicky enough to work smoothly, which seals nicely. The six buttons are present to control the speaker. A Bluetooth pairing button, volume down, power on/off, JBL connect, volume up, and play/pause button.

A double press of play/pause button skips the track. But there is no provision to play the previous track. Also, you can access Siri or Google by long-pressing the play/pause button.

Sound Quality

JBL has put some excellent efforts in the sound department. Two passive radiators are working so effortlessly that it produces more transparent highs and a bit deeper bass. When you hear it once, you just can’t believe in your ears that the sound comes from this speaker. The highs are balanced.

The most appreciating thing about the speaker is it can not get distorted even at high volume. This speaker can fill the medium size room when you put the volume at 100%.

Battery Performance

Well, the most surprising factor is here.

Battery!

JBL claims that Charge 3 can survive up to 20 hours of use. This is possible only if you put the volume below 50%. In my experiment, I got 12-13 hours at a volume of 60%. But if you go for 100%, the speaker may last up to 5 hours. Five hours at hundred percent is not a bad deal.

JBL Charge 3 coming with 6000 mAh capacity, and it takes up to 4 hours to recharge.

Please note that this speaker has a USB port, that means you can use this speaker as a power bank. You can charge your smartphone by using this port. If you use the speaker used to charge the smartphone, then probably you will not get back up for the speaker.

Others

A built-in speakerphone is there to pick up the call.

The speakerphone works decently, and you can hear a clear sound at both ends.

JBL Charge 3 comes with an IPX7 rating. It means the speaker can survive in deep water, i.e., 3 feet for 30 minutes. You can enjoy the music near the beach, in the pool or bathroom also.

The Charge 3 is compatible with JBL connect features. With the help of this feature, you can connect more speakers with the JBL connect feature. You can get stereo effects when two speakers are connected.

Final Words

Overall I really love the speaker as it’s a perfect combination of balanced sound, build quality, and excellent battery life.

You can use this speaker everywhere as it comes with an IPX7 rating.

Although there are only a few disadvantages, the only thing that should be improved in the next upgrade is balance sound crisper highs and lower lows.

JBL Flip 5 is the upgraded version of Flip 4, as there are only a few changes that take place. Apart from some standard ideal features, the major upgrades are the type-c charging port, RMS output improvement, and 4800 mAh long-lasting battery.

Inside The Box.

JBL Flip 5 comes with a regular box, and not like premium packing like Flip 4. When you open the box, you will find a significant and durable cylindrical case in which a Bluetooth speaker is placed. A quick start guide and warranty card are present in another flat case. Also, you get a USB type-c charging cable. There is no ac adapter.

Design and Build quality

The entire body is wrapped with the wire mesh. The very durable rubber runs across the length of the speaker onto the sides, and it feels like this thing can really take a beating. We have the play/pause button. If you press it once, it plays or pauses the track. If you press it twice, it skips forward.

Along with these buttons, we got the volume up, down, and JBL Party boost button. When you flip the speaker again, you will notice the power button, which is OneTouch on and off. The power light indicator is right there, which is a new upgrade. The type-c port is present near the power light indicator, which is not covered under any rubber flap.

Sound Quality

The bass sounds absolutely fantastic for such a small speaker. We got little radiators on the side just like previous flip models, and these things really kick out. You can notice them vibrate as the bass is kicking out. It sounds absolutely fantastic. The lows and mids sound great. The highs at high volume tend to sound a little tinny to me. I’m not saying that as bad but sounds a little bit tinny at the max volume.

The USB type-c is wide open. Nothing is covering here, yet it can still go in the water and be perfectly okay. Since the micro USB is not waterproof, the USB type-c can handle that type of water submersion.

You don’t have to worry about the placement of the speaker. You can put it anywhere, like in the bathroom, near the pool, on the beach, etc. All credit goes to the IPX7 waterproof design.

Battery Performance

Flip 5 is packed with a 4800 mAh powerful battery, and this is something that this speaker must buy. Usually, you will not get such a massive battery capacity, especially in Bluetooth speakers. Because of this, it manages to entertain you up to 10 hours without interruption.

The most significant advantage of the speaker is here as it is coming with a type-c port. The type-c port is specially designed to reduce the charging time. Because of the type-c port, the speaker takes only up to 3 hours to charge this massive battery.

Is the new JBL Flip 5  worth buying?

I’m not really sure with the omission of JBL connect plus, without a 3.5-millimeter auxiliary jack, without voice assistant, without the ability to take calls while you’re streaming music, it’s just hard to recommend a Bluetooth speaker with so many feature omissions from the previous model. Of course,

I’m not saying it’s a lousy speaker. It absolutely sounds fantastic; it’s probably one of the better sounding portable speakers that I own. This thing is absolutely great sounding. USB type-c and 4800 mAh is something worth it. Just prioritize your needs and go for it.
