Inside of the box, you get the speaker a Quick Start Guide, reference guide, warranty information, and some info on the mobile app, which gives you control of some of the settings. You also get a charger and unlike most Bluetooth speakers that charge with the USB cable. An AC adapter that you plug into the wall.

Build Quality

Sony SRS XB 13 is quite a bit larger than Sony SRS XB 20 measuring nine inches wide, three and a quarter inches tall and three and a half inches deep. It also has some heft as well, weighing almost double at just over two pounds.

The speaker is made of a mix of textured and smoother plastic, which has a nice feel to it. There are two front-facing drivers with a passive radiator on the front and another on the rear. The front of the speaker is covered in a metal grille. It includes a colored ring that lights up and pulses to your music.

There are two strobing white LEDs flash to the beat. The light ring will cycle through a few different colors, and using the app; you can choose between a few different presets or choose a solid color.

The lights do drain more of the battery, so if you want to conserve battery life or find them distracting, you can quickly turn them off by holding the extra-base button down. The lights get pretty bright, and they look good even in a wallet room. All the controls are on the top.

From the left, there’s the extra-base button that you can hold down to toggle the lights on or off. Next to that is the call button, which will answer, and a call a single press will bring up Google Now or Siri, and if you hold it down, there are voice prompts to tell you the battery level.

Battery Performance

Battery life is rated at up to 24 hours, but Sony says that’s what the lights off. I was able to get over 20 hours of playback at 75% volume with the lights on. Another thing to point out is, once the battery gets to about 20%, then the maximum volume is reduced, so the last few hours before the battery is going to die, it’s capped at less than 50% volume.

Others

There’s a built-in mic for voice calls too, and call quality sounded great. It’s loud and clear on both ends.

Sound Quality

Now when it comes to the sound quality, the Sony SRS XB 13 sounds great with plenty of low ends. You can toggle the extra bass on and off, but I think it sounds better on all the time. It’s not going to give you a crazy amount of bass, but it fills out the low end and makes the speaker sound larger.

The kick drums hit nice and hard with more low-end presence than JBL charge three. there’s a big difference in the amount of bass here compared to the smaller Sony SRS XB 20

Final Word

The Sony SRS XB 13 is also water-resistant, but it’s not entirely watertight. So it’s okay if it’s just going to get splashed, but it’s not meant to be fully submerged in water.

So the Sony SRS XB 13 is a great speaker overall. The lights are cool with the option to customize them or disable them altogether. The ability to charge another device is excellent. Battery life is fantastic. I like the NFC for quick pairing, and EQ is an impressive feature. It’s not my favorite overall. If you don’t need a fully waterproof speaker, this is the one to get.
