After the success of Flip Essential, JBL launched Flip 5 in December 2013. The main features of this speaker are SoundClear echo and noise cancellation, NFC, signature sound, etc.

Inside The Box

When you open the box, you will get two cylindrical-shaped items, i.e., one is a JBL Flip 5 portable Bluetooth speaker, and another is a durable case. You can keep your speaker in the case and use it for portability and carry it safely on the drives, and all you can like it will be safe in your backpack.

Also, you get an adapter and USB cable for charging. This cable and adapter are placed in that cylindrical case. There is a quick start guide with some essential instructions present in the box. All the stuff is well packed in a precise way.

Design and Build Quality

JBL Flip 5 measures approximately 16 cm in length and around 6.5 cm wide. It is available in five different colors that look very attractive and eye-catchy. It seems very long-lasting as it is made up of durable aluminum with silicon grip. A JBL branding is embossed on its front-facing side that looks very premium.

On the backside of the speaker, you will find two ports. A micro USB port is there to recharge the Bluetooth speaker and a 3.5 mm audio jack for the wired connection or Bluetooth less connection. Besides these ports, five tiny, white-colored LED lights indicate the percentage of battery.

On the left-hand side, five buttons are present for controlling the speaker; a volume up, volume down, Bluetooth pairing, calling, and power on/off button. While on the right-hand side, there is NFC ( Near Field Connectivity). NFC allows you to connect the mobile instantly without Bluetooth. To use this feature, your device must be compatible with NFC.

Battery Performance

With the capacity of 2000 mAh, Li-ion batteries can last up to 4 hours with a 60% volume. If you increase the volume, then you will not get even 4 hours backup. Don’t know why a 2000 mAh battery lasts only for a few hours. It takes almost 3 to get fully charged.

Sound Quality

The sound of JBL Flip 5 can fill the medium size room with sufficient bass. If we talk about mids and high, it is decent. Please note that this speaker is not ideal for those who want an extra bass or something to rock the party with a big sound. If we consider its price, the sound is good enough.

I think this speaker is perfect for listening to something like pop and hip-hop. When you increase the volume at 100%, the speaker starts to distort a little bit, but still, it’s listenable.

Rest of all

The speakerphone option does work quite effectively with excellent noise cancellation. But a small ambient noise is there in the background though it’s okay at this range.

JBL Flip 5 stays connected with your device up to 30m after that connection starts to lose, and sound gets disturbed. Its 4.2 Bluetooth technology works seamlessly.

This speaker is neither waterproof nor water-resistant. I think most people are very disappointed with this fact, but again it’s all about the budget.

Final Words

So, JBL Flip 5 impressed me with its rugged design and other few features. This speaker is perfect for indoor use to listen to music, or watch youtube videos in loud volume. But the only disappointment with this speaker is it’s not waterproof.  Also, battery backup should be a little bit more. But as I told you, it’s all about budget.

If your budget allows you to invest a few more money, to get the waterproof feature, go for Flip 4 or Flip 5.
